Some more blocks.

I guess I over shot the once a week idea, 

got a little carried away.

I have been doing 3 to 5 blocks a day to

try and get caught up.

These little beggars are fun, yet frustrating at the

same time.  

See the one 4th down on the right, 

those are 1/2 inch HST.  Smallest so far.

Well until today maybe when I did 1  X 1 1/4 inch flying geese.

Show you that in a minute.

This group includes my blue and teal, going into green.

Remember these are 3 1/2 unfinished.

Just a closer look at the greens.

All fabrics are from my stash, mostly FQs

 Yellows going into oranges, next will be moving into reds.

So I thought I'd show you today's block up close.

After printing out the pattern, I then cut and prepare

several at a time.  Here it was 3 days worth.  I generally 

choose one complicated one and two or three easy ones.

Get my lines drawn and keep the pieces on their

pattern print out.  

Today the block it a 4 T

It calls for 8 -  1 X 1 1/2 inch flying geese.

The corner pieces are 1 inch sq.

Unlike the larger blocks precision is more important,

not a lot of fudge room.  So it is truly a hair on

the corner side of that line, not on it or it won't fit.

You learn this as you go along.  

Very different from working with a larger block.

Working on these IS fun, I enjoy the challenge.

365 Quilt Challenge

I began my adventure today, I am a bit behind

since I just found this and need to catch all of 

the January blocks and up till the 5th of Feb.

So today I did January 1 and Feb 1 blocks

This is the quilt in a line drawing.

Here are my blocks

they are 3.5 inches

My plan is to share the blocks I make for this once a week.

Hopefully, I will keep on schedule.

We had a great retreat and I spent my time

putting sashing on the ribbon quilt.

I really like this deep purple with the ribbons.

All the blocks are joined now.

Still need to add the outer sashes, then 

on to the borders.  

Backing will be the same purple.

Planning out the quilting, I am thinking feathers

on the outer border, not sure about the quilting for the 

sashing yet, blocks will be stitched in the ditch

between each ribbon.

My original idea for these stars was a quilt top.

But, I have changed my mind, 

a girls prerogative, right?

So I made a few pot holders, 

or is it a mug rug, or maybe 

a trivet.  So many personalities.

I will place these on my Etsy shop for sale.

I am keep one set for myself.

 I will keep this green and pink dot for myself.

Part 2

Ribbons, ribbons, ribbons!

Really it has been enjoyable sewing 

the ribbons to their foundation.

Using clear thread and a zig zag on top

and white thread in the bobbin.  

(Did I already tell you that?)

I have averaged 20 blocks per day, which

includes cutting, and marking the foundation 

and then adding the ribbons.

Backing fabric is ordered, but it is nearly Christmas

(well the day of ordering was) so I do not 

have much hope for a fast delivery, at least if 

my experience this year with receiving and sending

packages is any indication.  Update; it is now the 28th and 

still no fabric, why am I not surprised.  Maybe tomorrow

Here are the 90 blocks needed for the top. 

I wish I could get the sparkle to show.

So while I await the purple fabric I got to work on a 

sham.  These ribbons are smaller  and I did not have enough

white or other colors to make it look good.

So we have red, white (a little trim) and blue.

It is all done but took a long time.  I wanted to miter the corners of the trim

and thank goodness for YouTube 

and 

those who are generous in sharing their expertise.

I would have never figured this out.

So here we are as we await the fabric for the 

sashing and border.

Lets start from the beginning. 

 

Lots of show ribbons for 4H for one of the gals in town.

Over 400 to give you an idea of the many times Emma 

has shown her critters.

 First task was to sort according to size and then deconstruct

and press .

 Once taken apart there don't seem to be as many, we are

using all but the 2 smallest sizes.  Oh I did not include those in the 

number of ribbons.  I am planning on using the smaller one

to make a pillow sham.

 Once I played around with the ribbons and found 

the best size to make the block I could 

begin cutting out the fabric to use as a backing 

to hold the ribbons.  It was decide to make 6 inch blocks

so I began cutting 6 1/2 inch pieces of white fabric.

Then using a friXion pen to mark the 1/4 inch

seam allowance for placement of the ribbons.

  

Using clear thread with white

cotton thread in the bobbin and a zigzag stitch 

I started attaching the ribbons to the backing fabric.

 The first 3 with the proposed arrangement.

 The first set of 15 done and arranged on the design wall.

I am thinking of using a deep royal purple (I know it looks blue here) 

with them, for borders and maybe sashing, not sure about the sashing

yet, will see if I need them to help with sizing of the quilt.

This is going to be really pretty, I know you can not really see

it in the picture but the gold sparkles and the ribbon

fabric shines.  

Most of the main colors will be blue, red and purple.

Now off to shop for deep purple fabric.

And now the beginnings of a ribbon quilt.

Looks like we well get a queen size with all the 

ribbons Emma has earned during her 

4 H show years.

 Almost all of
 the ribbons are prepared.

Now to finalize the design.
